How Damavand height get famous with 5671 m?

Tyler Thomson was the first europian who successfully climbed Damavand Peak in 1836. Colonel Mohammad Sadegh Khan Qajar and his team could ascend this peak in 1857 as the first Iranian. In the distant past, even before these ascents, Iranian thought that the Damavand height is 6877 m. Different numbers and of course not so scientific estimates have been presented and used. But in 1966 Alan Bach calculated Damavand height and wrote in a report “Damavand height is 5670 meters of the moon” which changed later to 5671 m. After this 5671 went trough the textbooks and we all remembered it forever.

How to Measure?

Scientists made more accurate and scientific measurements in recent years. Including research and measurements made by the Geological Survey of Iran. Based on this research Damavandh height was announced 5619 meters.

What is the real Damavand height?

The country’s mapping organization perform the most accurate measurement in 2006. due to measurement, which was carried out in August and September of the same year with the creation of 6 measuring stations, the Damavand Peak was 5609.20(-+0.5) meters. The stations were at Abali, Ira, sheepfold, shelter (third court), ice waterfall and Damavand peak. The most reliable number that has been provided due to the method of work and accurate calculations is 5609m. In fact, this is the Damavand height of the average water level of the Persian Gulf in Shahid Rajaei port. It means increasing the accuracy of measurements with the help of new equipment and methods.

Where is the Damavand peak?

Due to its conical shape, Damavand Peak has a relatively large surface area of ​​about 150 meters by 150 meters. The point measured as the peak in the report of the National Mapping Organization is on a rock on the end of the south side route. Certainly, the frozen sheep of Damavand peak and the memorial plaques are there.

Why Damavand is the twelfth highest peak in the world?

It is interesting to know also that the relative height of Damavand. Iranian compared height of the peak to the lowest valley between this peak and the nearest peak is 4661 meters, which ranks Damavand in the twelfth highest peak in the world.

So, finally from now on the height of Damavand peak is 5609 meters.
